Pink Line Screens Now Show Coach Crowding

WHAT HAPPENED

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday, 30 October, extended its real-time coach occupancy display to the Pink Line (Line 7). Load sensors on each train compare a coach’s current weight with its empty weight, and the platform information display shows the result as a percentage for coaches C1 to C6 before the train pulls in. The system has run on the Magenta Line (Line 8, Botanical Garden to Janakpuri West) since 2022. Anuj Dayal, DMRC’s principal executive director for corporate communications, said the Pink Line’s circular layout made the rollout harder.

WHY IT MATTERS

Crowding is rarely even along a train, and riders tend to bunch at the coaches nearest the stairs. A live figure for each coach lets you walk to an emptier door before the train stops, which spreads the load and can cut boarding time at busy stations. The Pink Line is only the second corridor on the network to get the display.

EXPERT VIEW

We rate this as one of the most useful low-cost passenger tools on the network, because it relies on train load sensors rather than new cameras or platform hardware. The real test is behaviour: if riders act on the numbers, peak loads in the end coaches should fall closer to those in the middle. Now that DMRC has handled the harder circular-line case, we expect it to name at least one more line for the display within the next six months. Confidence: medium.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

On your next Pink Line trip, check the platform screen for the C1 to C6 figures before the train arrives and wait at the door of the lowest one. If you travel with luggage or a child, use the display to pick a lighter coach so you can board without a scramble.
