Modi Starts Work on Ahmedabad Metro Extensions
WHAT HAPPENED
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 30 October, laid the foundation stone for two extensions of the Ahmedabad Metro. Phase-2A is a 6 km link from Koteshwar Road to SVPI Airport with five stations, four elevated and one underground at the airport, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The route runs elevated from Koteshwar Road to Taj Circle via Hansol, then underground to the airport. Phase-2B is a 3.3 km line from GIFT City to Shahpur with three elevated stations, costing about Rs 900 crore.
WHY IT MATTERS
Together the two links add 9.3 km at a combined cost of about Rs 2,700 crore to a network that NDTV India puts at 65 km with 56 stations. A station at SVPI Airport would give flyers a fixed-time option instead of road traffic on the airport approach, and the Shahpur spur widens the catchment of GIFT City.
EXPERT VIEW
The airport leg will decide how this project is judged, because underground work near a live airport usually moves slower than elevated viaduct. At about Rs 300 crore per km, Phase-2A costs well above the roughly Rs 273 crore per km of the GIFT City spur, which reflects its tunnelled section. We expect the GIFT City to Shahpur stretch to open before the airport link, and we expect civil contracts for both phases to be awarded within the next 12 months. Confidence: medium.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
If you live or work near Koteshwar Road, Hansol or Taj Circle, watch for traffic diversion notices once contractors move in. If you commute to GIFT City, follow the Phase-2B tender notices, which will give the first firm timeline for the line.
